First allow me to explain that this supposed "one-time" craving for waffles that I had, has now turned into a full blown waffle extravaganza. I really am trying to find some damn good waffles in Toronto. It's a mission and I know... Get a life, right?
In this quest, I found a place called Goed Eten located in the heart of Toronto's Ossington & College area (map). It's got a nice airy feeling to it, with high ceilings and exposed brick. Huge store-front windows run along the entire front of the restaurant making it nice and bright. Decor is best described as: Soho coffee shop meets 50's art deco and the staff were welcoming and lent something extra to the already chilled out vibe.
The claim is that they have "savoury Brussels’ style waffles" and I personally think, that sounds like a challenge. When it came time to order, I decided on the "Brussels Benedict" which consisted of eggs benny, peameal bacon, waffle and apple cole-slaw ($9), while my partner in crime tried the "Ham and cheddar omelet with home fries, toast and apple cole-slaw" ($8). After only a short while of sipping on our lattes, the food came. My eggs benny were put on top of the peameal bacon with the waffle on the side, which I appreciated as I thought it would be on top of the waffle. It was really easy to know where to start digging into first.
So now we're down to taste. I'll start with the eggs, one word: Amazing! The hollandaise sauce was delicious (even though it's misspelled on the menu) and the egg and bacon underneath were cooked to perfection. I then moved over to the coleslaw and both my partner in crime and I were both pretty surprised at how good it was, considering it seemed to simply be: Julienne cut apples, disks of polski ogorki pickles and thousand island dressing drizzled on top. We both felt the slaw was a nice way to freshen up the mouth on a moments notice. Okay so now the waffle, after all that's what I dragged my tired ass down here for on this hot and humid brunch hour day. The texture of the waffles was good, not doughy and not overly crunchy either and the size was IMVHO perfect for the meal size (see photo above). The taste was really what I found to be the most interesting though. I wasn't blown away by it but something about it was really amazing tasting. Like the taste of homemade bread versus a well made bakery bread, both great tasting, but nothing beats that homemade taste. Somehow this was also translating into these waffles and I ate every last morsel, just trying to relate it to something else my taste buds have tasted before, to no avail!
Both of us left, very happy with the food, service and the overall atmosphere of the place. It's a little far to travel all the time for us, but I will return to finally get to the bottom of; what makes these waffles taste like no other I've ever tasted before!
Overall a 4/5 and I would definitely recommend.
